All Nicotine Weekend, or ANW, is many things.\u00a0 from the outside it may just look like a “guys weekend”.\u00a0\u00a0 Just a bunch of middle-aged men, dwinking (ed. note: see ANW rules<\/a> as to why ‘dw..’ is used to start this word<\/em>) too much and playing adolescent games.\u00a0 But it is so much more…<\/p>\n

ANW started in 1996.\u00a0 Brothers Leo and Vin trekked North to close the family cabin for the winter.\u00a0 Leaving at home the stress of a recent family tragedy and the commotion of\u00a0everyday life, that Saturday night was spent consuming way too much beer and whiskey, reliving old-times and generally renewing the brotherhood that both had been missing for years.\u00a0 Though that first –\u00a0as yet un-named ANW was just a short day and a half, the seed was set.\u00a0 The brothers realized that this escape was just what they needed.\u00a0 but more than that, they realized that they needed to share the experience.\u00a0 So before the first ANW was even over, they laid plans for the following year’s closing weekend.<\/p>\n

In October of 1997 the original two were joined by two more.\u00a0 And since more is better than less, they also decided that\u00a0they better go up on Friday instead of Saturday.\u00a0 More beer\u00a0and whiskey were consumed, more brotherly bonds were renewed, and with all that extra time, they even ate well, played cards, smoked cigars, chewed tobacco\u00a0and even tried their hands at some old dwinking games from their college days. \u00a0It was also\u00a0during this trip that the weekend was named.\u00a0Since most of\u00a0The Wives frowned on tobacco use, for some, this was the only time of the year that Cigar smoking or tobacco chewing\u00a0could be celebrated.\u00a0 A cigar before breakfast?\u00a0 no problem.\u00a0 Want to throw a plug of Redman in on the disc golf course?\u00a0 Go ahead!\u00a0 How about a pinch of Skoal after dinner?\u00a0 Hell yes!\u00a0 All Nicotine Weekend seemed like an appropriate title.<\/p>\n

In 1998, ANW really came to look like what it is today.\u00a0 Six guys, all frazzled from the demands of the work-a-day world,\u00a0made the weekend even longer.\u00a0 Now Thursday thru Sunday, there was a lot of time to fill.\u00a0 Disc golf was added as a way to fill that\u00a0time during the day and Mexican was introduced as a way to… well, as a way to get dwunk\u00a0 at night.<\/p>\n

In the years since that time, a few of the original crew have fallen off the ANW bandwagon and a few others have jumped on.\u00a0 We’ve added rules, added games, added yet another day (we now start on Wednesday)\u00a0and we have\u00a0organized the willy-nilly throwing of Frisbees into the now legendary Disc Golf Tournament.\u00a0 We even changed the location.\u00a0 But what hasn’t changed is what ANW really is.\u00a0 Take away all of the rules and the silly games, take away the\u00a0competition, the food\u00a0and the beer (actually, please don’t take away the beer) and we would still have ANW.\u00a0 Because what ANW is, and what it has always been is the much needed\u00a0chance for some of the best guys in the world to get together once a year\u00a0to\u00a0decompress, to\u00a0rejuvenate, to let loose, to reminisce\u00a0and to just be GUYS.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
